“Light is the mother of color.
Light reveals to us the spirit and living soul of the world through colors." –Alma Thomas

About Dawn
My name is Dawn. I grew up in the polyglot, bustling borough of Queens, New York, and now live in the Twin Cities, Minnesota / Mni Sota Makoce - Homeland of the Dakota and Annishinaabe. I am a third-generation Chinese American, granddaughter of a paper son who immigrated to the United States during the Chinese Exclusion Act era.
Since early childhood, creative play, imagination, finding beauty in the poetry that is in all things and the magic of visual language kept my spirit alive, especially during difficult times. At Wellesley College, I majored in Art History and Studio Art- I am deeply appreciative for the time and space I had as a young adult to be in community with peers and professors with whom I engaged in deep discussion about what it means to make art, how and why. After graduating from college, I did not know exactly know how making art would fit into my life while trying to find ways to support myself financially. I would eventually realize that listening to my intuition would guide me in sustaining a creative life, no matter what kind of 9-5 job I did - as long as I honored my values, truth and inner-voice.
Making art helps connect me deeply with Spirit, soul and aliveness. Making art helps me to be the best version of myself. My creative practice helps me find and be in community with all beings who embody/inspire love, kindness and compassion in this world.
I am in awe of many things such as the miracles of biodiversity occurring daily on mother earth, the mystery of spiritual realms, dreaming, poetry as prayer, haiga, religious iconography, the magic of illuminated manuscripts, saints, typography, calligraphy, Bazi astrology, origami/paper arts, and much much more. I have an affinity for pigeons, snails and all kinds of marine animals. Swimming, bicycling and outdoor walks keep me sane and grounded. I believe in and strive for collective liberation.
Some of the many artists & poets who inspire me are: Hilma af Klimt, Yayoi Kusama, Keith Haring, Alma Thomas, Louise Erdrich, Lynda Barry, Ebony Kalir, Issa, Chiyo-ni, Audre Lorde, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Rumi and Mosab Abu Toha.
