Yeh-Yeh was my paternal grandfather who instilled in me the magic of paper-folding and origami while he was still alive during my childhood. Yeh-Yeh was also resourceful and thrifty, saving various kinds of found objects he collected on his neighborhood walks in the garage or a junk drawer.

Haiku for Yeh-Yeh

pieces of paper-
transformed by markings and folds;
new structures, new life.

Preface

My creative practice is dedicated to my ancestors and to all those for whom I will become an ancestor. Specifically, I acknowledge my Yeh Yeh, a "paper son", who immigrated to the US from China during the Chinese Exclusion Act era which lasted from 1882-1943.

Given the history of paper and its iterations through innovations with origins in China, and then throughout the world, eg: as currency, as documents that could transform identity, as access to freedom and resources, as containers of information, as spiritual texts, as toilet paper(!), as art, and more- I am excited to further explorations and expressions with paper.

When I create visual poetry and artist books through the process of collaging, paper-folding, paper-dyeing, marbling and other paper-based artistic experimentations, I am channeling a sense of awe, of possibilities, of joy, of magical transformations, of interconnectedness with all beings through Spirit/Source.

In addition to creating artistic works, I enjoy sharing my approaches to bookmaking and visual poetry with others through in-person, hands-on learning opportunities, and also by sharing online resources I have discovered in my own self-directed learning journey.

*Artist's note: Although the art forms, terms and sources listed above primarily focus on Japanese culture - the origins and migration of material and artistic knowledge pertaining to paper came from China (where it was invented by Cai Lun in 105 CE) and Korea. Buddhism, with origins in India, played a major role innovating papermaking and bookmaking in the Chinese culture. For example, the Diamond Sutra, a sacred Buddhist text considered to be the world's earliest printed book, was produced in China.  In 610 CE, a Korean Buddhist monk named Damjing traveled to Japan, where he introduced papermaking methods.

Video Tutorials

Step-by-step, video tutorials showing how to make different kinds of pop-out books and zines which I have taught at in-person workshops across the Twin Cities and in Ely, Mni Sóta Makoce.

Since 2022, I have been primarily constructing petal fold books of comiku (comics + haiku) thanks to the
 fold-along video series produced by Minnesota Center for Book Arts, which I discovered during Covid lockdowns.
