Everything/ I pick up/ is alive :
Literary Pilgrimages & Artistic Explorations across Japan
Many thanks to the Mary Elvira Stevens Travel Fellowship and the Wellesley College Center for Career Education for supporting me during this once-in-a-lifetime journey visiting memorials, museums and trails of my favorite haiku poets + artists from September - November 2023.
The connection to the history, people, land, intangible cultural heritage, words and imagery along the way has woven into new literary works I have created while there,
and am still creating since my return. My literary and artistic repertoire, without a doubt, has transformed significantly. I am venturing into new poetic forms such as tanka, which I learned more about during my trip. I am experimenting more with washi and hand paper-dye techniques such as orizomegami.
Below are some examples of hand-made, mixed media zines and artist books of my own original haiku and those of revered poets in Japan.
*During my travels, I donated copies of select zines ("Everything..." by Chiyo-ni) and pop-out artist books (of haiku by Issa and Basho) to the following museums: Issa Memorial Museum, Basho Memorial Hall (Iga-City), Basho Museum (Tokyo) and
Chiyo-jo Haiku Museum (Ishikawa).
**Click here to view online photo albums of various literary-inspired pilgrimage walks on the Oku-no-hosomichi, Henro-michi, island hike/bike adventures, micro-visiting artist residencies in Mukaishima + Kobe, plus temple and museum visits.
