GRAPHIC NARRATIVES & POETRY

Chinese American Herstories: Graphic Biographies

Excerpts from my self-published paperback comics biography series on Chinese American herstories focusing on the lives of Tye Leung Schulze and Tien Fu Wu, translators for justice during the Chinese Exclusion Act era in San Francisco's Chinatown and across the US.

"Dawn's beautifully drawn and collaged book ["Tye Leung Schulze: Translator for Justice"]  is an important addition to the diversity of U.S. immigrant experiences. Dawn uses Tye's life to explore broader themes of women's rights, xenophobia, and voter suppression. Her work is relevant to today's world. It is a vital read for anyone who wants to learn more about how the legacy of systemic racism and anti-immigrant policies in the U.S. impact the lives of ordinary people. This should be required reading for middle- and high-school students."

- Ebony Flowers, author of “Hot Comb”

Comiku

Scroll through examples below of my various mixed media, visual poetry compositions including "comiku" (comics + haiku).

My "comiku" petal fold books can be found in the library collections of the Minneapolis College of Art + Design, Hennepin County Public Library, Virginia Commonwealth University and are available for sale at the Shop at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA).

I draw creative inspiration from Mother Nature, Mni Sóta Makoce, dreams, art, literature, my East Asian heritage, present moments and historical events. I enjoy experimenting with zine/bookmaking, paper dyeing, and interactive comics.
